***UPDATED Wednesday evening *** Course Descriptions :
The race begins and finishes in Emil’s Clearing within the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Trail System, not in the parking lot like last year. This will offer us more protection from the elements and better access to trails to eliminate cross-over.
When you arrive : Drive to the far end of the West Village parking lot to drop off your bike and skis in the transition zones. Volunteers will check you in between 8:00 and 9:30. You will be given your trail pass at the pre-race meeting on Saturday, but if you do not make the meeting, please check in with race officials at the bike/ski transition zone to pick up your packet and trail pass.
You may access the stadium from the far end of the parking lot — signs will point the way down the hill to the start. You may warm-up on the ski and run courses. Warming-up on the bike course will be weather dependent. Be sure your leaving the parking lot by 9:30 to make your way to the stadium for pre-race instructions. We will start exactly at 10:00.
RUN: 2.5km Course : 2 Laps : Runners will complete 2 laps on a short course before heading up “Screamer,” past the Nordic Lodge and to the far end of the Mt. Bachelor West Village parking lot. Runners are required to wear “running shoes;” snowshoes are not allowed, although gaiters are a good idea if the snow is soft.
Transition 1 : The transition from run to bike will occur in the parking lot. We will record your split entering the transition zone. You will walk your bike from the rack to the exit, then mount. There will not be any carpet or surface other than snow. Please bring a towel or piece of carpet if you would like a snow-free surface for changing shoes.
BIKE : 2 laps : Depending on snow conditions, the bike course lap will be 2.5 - 4km with total distance 8-12km. The plan right now is a loop from the parking lot transition zone to the “Oval” out on the Nordic Trails. The course will not be 2-way traffic on the groomed surface but will be “2-lanes” in the parking lot. The parking lot surface may be icy given the warm weather we’re having right now. However, the weather looks good for the weekend and the moisture in the snow with cold temps could mean the perfect course! Fat tires and low pressure make for a fast ride! Studs are not necessary. The bike portion will be our primary focus, with the goal being to provide the most rideable surface possible.
Transition 2 : When you return to the bike exchange, you will replace your bike on the rack and run in your bike shoes up the ramp to your skis. Again, please bring your own towel or carpet if needed. Most people have their ski boots already in the bindings so all you have to do is slip your foot into the boot, lace up, grab your poles and go!
SKI : 4km Course : 2 Laps : We highly recommend that everyone uses skate technique. Classic tracks will not be provided. The course descends from the stadium to the middle elevation Nordic trails where the terrain rolls through huge fir and hemlock. These are some of the best ski trails in Oregon and we’re sure everyone is going to love the fast descents and challenging climbs! The lap lane takes you past the stadium before heading out one more time.
Post-race : There will be a tent for shelter and a hot lunch for racers. Preliminary results will be posted as they come in. Awards will start around 12:30.
Final Course Maps : The maps below reflect the courses for this year. The bike course is still subject to change based on weather. I’d love to make it longer if the course looks solid! Click the image to enlarge. Profiles and other info will be posted soon!
